Hesse: Pro Asyl: Admission of Afghans via humanitarian visas

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - The human rights organization Pro Asyl has called on the federal government to do more to take in vulnerable people from Afghanistan. The local staff procedure must be reformed and admissions via humanitarian visas must be continued, even after a federal admissions program comes into force, the organization demanded on Tuesday.

The traffic light coalition must stand by its promises, emphasized Günter Burkhardt, the managing director of Pro Asyl. "Anyone who is in acute danger must be rescued immediately. That is why humanitarian visas must continue to be issued." As a first step, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Alliance 90/Greens) must ensure that the high-risk cases are processed in her house and then forwarded to the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

Pro Asyl had campaigned for the admission of women from the group "United Voice of Women for Peace", whose members had campaigned, among other things, for women's rights and the development of civil society in Afghanistan. 31 women from the group have been in Germany for a few weeks, others are still waiting for their visa applications to be processed. Many had lived in hiding for months, fearing for their lives and freedom.

A joint appeal by the group reads: "We were rescued from hell. Now we are in Germany and in freedom. But the cruel acts of the Taliban against thousands of other women and men who are suffering like us are not lost on us Head. A year after the Taliban took power, tens of thousands are still waiting to be accepted and evacuated. The process before a person is finally allowed to leave Afghanistan takes far too long."
