Hesse: Rhine closed to ship traffic due to bomb disposal

Rüdesheim/Bad Schwalbach (dpa/lhe) - Due to the defusing of another World War II bomb, the Rhine between Rüdesheim and Assmannshausen will be closed to shipping on Thursday. As the civil protection of the Rheingau-Taunus district announced on Wednesday in Bad Schwalbach, the railway line on the right bank of the Rhine and the federal highway 42 along the river are also affected by the closure. Airplanes are not allowed to fly over the area. In Assmanshausen, individual residential buildings are also being evacuated.

According to the information, the 125-kilo bomb lies in a rocky forest area below the Niederwald hunting lodge. Experts from the explosive ordnance clearance service first want to cover the bomb with 20 tons of sand and a 23,000 liter water bladder and then detonate it in a controlled manner. Two of the three aerial bombs discovered were already rendered harmless on Tuesday.
