Hesse: Ring-necked parakeet population in Wiesbaden is now 5000

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - Wiesbaden is considered by ornithologists to be the parakeet capital of the Rhine-Main area. About 5,000 ring-necked parakeets live on site, according to the city's environmental agency. Among them are several hundred Alexander's parakeets. The first parrots made their home in Wiesbaden as early as the 1970s, presumably they escaped from their owners or were released. About ten years ago, estimates went from 1500 animals. During the day, the green ring-necked parakeets are foraging in small flocks of 20 to 40 birds, and at nightfall they fly to their roosting trees in the city center. While the birds are noisy and make a mess, the city rarely receives complaints.
