Hesse: SPD parliamentary group campaigns for the right to vote from the age of 16

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - The opposition SPD faction in the Hessian state parliament wants to reduce the right to vote in state elections to 16 years. "Each and every individual has the right to political co-determination," said parliamentary group leader Günter Rudolph on Wednesday in Wiesbaden at the presentation of a draft law. Other federal states have had good experiences with such a regulation. It was only this October that the Social Democrats failed in the state parliament with a push to lower the voting age in local elections to 16. In Hesse, active voting rights from the age of 18 continue to apply at the municipal level, as is the case in federal and state elections in Hesse.
