Hesse: Study on groundwater for the Rhine-Main region presented

Frankfurt (dpa/lhe) - The water supply working group has had the effects of climate change on the availability of groundwater in the Rhine-Main region examined in a study. A significant change in groundwater recharge can therefore be expected from 2040/2050, the working group announced on Wednesday. The periods for a new formation of groundwater would concentrate on shorter and shorter sections, it said. A significant increase in demand for the irrigation of agricultural land is also to be expected.

The changes in groundwater recharge in the Hessian Ried, Hessian Untermain and western Unterer Vogelsberg areas, which are important for the regional water supply, were examined. According to the company, the working group was founded in 1978 on the initiative of the Hessian state government. It bundles the expertise of water authorities, associations and institutions as well as the most important water procurement companies in southern Hesse.
