Hesse: the car stops at the level crossing and is caught by the train

Alsfeld/Kassel (dpa/lhe) - A broken-down car was hit by a train at a level crossing in Alsfeld. A 27-year-old was left with the vehicle on the tracks on Thursday evening, as the federal police in Kassel announced on Friday. The man then tried to get the car off the rails in the Leusel district with the help of his family – but in vain. According to the police, a local train coming from Fulda could not be braked in time by the train driver, collided with the car and threw it onto the roof. On the train, a 21-year-old woman suffered minor injuries when the brakes were applied.

The federal police estimated the damage to the level crossing at around 40,000 euros and the damage to the car at around 4,000 euros. The fire brigade brought 23 passengers from the train to Alsfeld station, and a replacement engine driver who was called also directed the train to Alsfeld station. The federal police are now investigating, and proceedings have been initiated on suspicion of a dangerous intervention in rail traffic.
