Hesse: The risk of poverty in Hesse has increased

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - According to the results of the latest state social report, the risk of poverty in Hesse has increased. The unemployed, single parents and people with low professional qualifications are particularly affected, as Minister of Social Affairs Kai Klose (Greens) explained on Monday in Wiesbaden. Families with many children, women and people without German citizenship are also much more likely to be affected or threatened by poverty than the average population.

According to the state social report, the poverty risk rates in Germany and Hesse rose again in 2020 compared to the previous year. At 17.4 percent, the rate in Hesse was higher than in Germany as a whole (16.1 percent) and also higher than in the western German states (15.5 percent). The poverty risk threshold in Hesse for a one-person household in 2020 was 1194 euros net. Households with less than 60 percent of the median income are considered poor.

The state social report has been published every five years since 2012. This time, the underlying study focused on single parents. The third state social report, which is over 300 pages long, is based on the most recent data available at the time it was created, which the ministry says can show developments up to 2020.
