Hesse: Thousands do Abi without going to high school

Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Thousands of students in Hesse do their Abitur without attending a high school. In the 2020/2021 school year alone, there were more than 5,500, according to a response from Minister of Education Alexander Lorz (CDU) to a small request from the FDP. Most of them have previously learned in a Realschule or a Realschule branch or in an integrated comprehensive school. Other graduates had previously been to special schools or secondary schools.

The highest number of high school graduates without continuous attendance at a grammar school was in the 2016/2017 school year with 6442 students.

The offer in Hesse makes it possible to change the course of education. According to the Ministry of Education, students with a qualified secondary school leaving certificate could switch to the tenth year of the secondary school and with a qualified secondary school leaving certificate to the upper school. In Hesse, the basis for a qualified degree, for example in the Realschule, is the average grade or the learning development and work attitude.

"Being able to acquire the Abitur from different school careers is an essential aspect of equal opportunities," says the answer. This is the first course of education. "Furthermore, second chance education gives adults the chance to reconsider earlier educational decisions in the three-tier school system or vocational training, or to embark on completely new paths."
