Hesse: Three-digit million damage from wildlife accidents

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - In the past year, almost 104.8 million euros in property damage were caused by accidents involving wildlife. Since 2017, the sum has amounted to more than half a billion euros, as can be seen from the response from the Ministry of Economics and Transport to a request from the FDP parliamentary group.

The accidents are also very dangerous, also for drivers. Last year, three people died in 21,185 accidents involving wildlife on Hessian roads. According to the Ministry of the Interior, 35 road users were seriously injured and 185 slightly.

On the question of preventing accidents, the Ministry of Transport referred to the "Wuidi" app, which, as a supplement to the "Hessenwarn" app, warns drivers on routes with an increased risk potential. In addition, warning signs and wildlife protection fences would be used. The first results of a project by the Hessen-Mobil traffic authority, in which fragmented living spaces are to be networked, should be available before the end of this year.
