Hesse: University Hospital rejects KV criticism of post-Covid outpatient clinics

Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - The University Hospital Gießen and Marburg has reacted "with clear incomprehension" to the criticism of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KV) Hessen on the post-Covid outpatient clinics. The KV had accused these facilities of only treating patients with long-lasting symptoms for monetary reasons. "This allegation has no basis whatsoever," said Bernhard Schieffer, director of the cardiology clinic at the University Hospital in Marburg, on Thursday.

"Research and the development of successful treatment methods and drugs are the primary tasks of university medicine," said Schieffer. "Nobody has the intention of poaching patients from established colleagues - on the contrary: It is our task to establish therapy options under high pressure in order to provide our medical colleagues with them in order to be able to treat long-Covid patients across the board ."

For the university hospitals, the focus is on the seriously ill long-Covid patients. "It is obvious that patients with a new, unexplored clinical picture should be treated in a place where the scientific infrastructure allows the latest findings to be used in diagnostics and therapy." There is another university post-Covid outpatient clinic in Hesse at the University Hospital Frankurt.

The KV announced on Thursday: "From the KV point of view, we are dealing here more with a business model of the university hospitals. They benefit from the fact that medical laypeople often believe that university hospitals can do something better than the standard providers in terms of standard care." A university hospital also cooks “only with water”.
