Hesse: Woman hit when fleeing the police: custody

Fulda (dpa/lhe) - After he is said to have hit a pedestrian while fleeing a police check and injured her life-threateningly, a 21-year-old driver was taken into custody. The Fulda public prosecutor and the police announced on Monday that the man was being investigated on suspicion of attempted murder and a prohibited motor vehicle race.

The man was first noticed by a patrol with his car on Friday. When officers wanted to check the car, he reportedly drove away. According to witnesses, he was traveling at a very high speed, it said. When turning, the man then lost control of his car in a right-hand bend and got onto the sidewalk to the right of the roadway. There the car caught the 71-year-old woman and drove a few meters further against a wall.

The pedestrian got between the car and the wall. When the driver tried to drive on, he is said to have pressed the woman against the wall several times with the car and at least accepted the death of the 71-year-old, the police and prosecutors said. When the patrol arrived at the scene of the accident shortly afterwards, the officers arrested the man on the spot. The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.

At the request of the public prosecutor, the district court of Fulda issued a pre-trial arrest warrant against the man on Saturday. He was taken to a correctional facility. Why the German fled from the police is still being determined, said a spokeswoman for the Fulda public prosecutor. Witnesses were asked to contact the police.
