Hesse: Working group makes recommendations for dealing with wolves

Gießen (dpa/lhe) - The "Wolf in Hessen" working group has made recommendations for dealing with wild animals in the state. Among other things, after a meeting on Monday in Gießen, the committee calls for the abolition of individual prevention areas in Hesse, as a spokeswoman for the State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) in Wiesbaden announced. According to the recommendation of the working group, it should be possible for farmers throughout the country to receive funding for preventive measures against wolf attacks. In addition, the committee is calling for, among other things, an expansion of wolf monitoring.

Wolves have been coming back to their traditional habitats in Hesse for some time. This employs grazing livestock farmers, among others. "Only with comprehensive herd protection will we be able to achieve a peaceful coexistence of humans, grazing animals and wolves - other countries have shown that it works," says HLNUG President Thomas Schmid.

The first meeting of the working group took place in October 2021. Since then, recommendations have been worked out in small groups, which the committee voted on on Monday. Around 40 representatives from 35 associations and authorities from the fields of grazing animal husbandry, nature conservation, agriculture, hunting and animal welfare took part. In a next step, the feasibility of the demands will be checked.
