Hesse: World War II bomb in Offenbach: up to 8,000 people affected

Offenbach (dpa / lhe) - Thousands of people have to leave their homes because a World War II bomb was found in Offenbach. The dud was discovered on Thursday morning in an open space in the Bürgel district, the city said. A radius of more than 750 meters around the site had to be cordoned off. Up to 8,000 people are affected. "The population is asked to leave the area and informed via loudspeakers," the city said.

The population was also asked to drive around the area extensively. It is a bomb with 250 kilograms of explosive force from the Second World War. A spokesman for the city said it was still unclear when the defusing would begin.

A World War II bomb was rendered harmless with a controlled demolition in Hanau on Wednesday. A total of around 16,000 people were affected by the measures, and a hospital also had to be partially evacuated.
