Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) - He suddenly cut his victim's neck: The Frankfurt Regional Court sentenced a 27-year-old man to five years in prison for attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm. However, the judges on Tuesday dropped the original charge of attempted murder on legal grounds. The verdict is not yet legally binding.

A dispute broke out between the 27-year-old and his friend of the same age in December 2021 after the friend asked the accused to look for a new place to live. A few weeks earlier, he had temporarily stayed in the apartment in Frankfurt's Nordweststadt.

Without warning, the defendant rose from the sofa, pushed the heavily intoxicated man's head to one side and dragged the knife several inches across his neck. Luckily, the carotid artery remained unharmed. The man then fled the apartment.

During the trial, the defendant fully confessed and apologized to the victim. Because he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the crime, the jury assumed limited criminal responsibility. The sentence was less than the seven-and-a-half year prison sentence demanded by the public prosecutor.
