Hessen: Submission rate for property tax returns is 50 percent

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - A few weeks before the end of the submission deadline for the property tax return, only about half of the property owners in Hesse have reported the required information. Finance Minister Michael Boddenberg (CDU) told the German Press Agency in Wiesbaden that around 1.5 million statements had been made in Hesse. This puts the delivery rate at just over 50 percent. More than 90 percent of the declarations were received electronically.

The submission deadline originally ended at the end of October of the current year, but was then extended to January 31, 2023. From 2025, property tax in Germany is to be recalculated. As part of this reform, almost 36 million properties nationwide have to be revalued with the help of owner information. In Hesse there are around 2.8 million properties.

It was good and right to extend the deadline, said Boddenberg. Now, however, it must be remembered how important the property tax is for the municipalities and a fair collection for the citizens. A timely submission of the declaration is very important for the success of the largest tax reform in post-war history. Since a noticeable increase in property tax returns is to be expected in the last few weeks before the deadline expires, the property tax offices of the tax offices will be given more staff.
