Home for Ottifanten and Co.: Otto Waalkes opens his own gallery

In addition to his jokes, comedian Otto Waalkes is best known for his drawings. Old and young love his Ottifanten. Reason enough for the 74-year-old to now dedicate his own gallery in Hamburg to them. And "Ottos BilderWelten" has even more to offer...

Comedian Otto Waalkes exhibits his art in his own gallery in Hamburg covering 100 square meters. The 74-year-old native of Emden opened "Ottos BilderWelten" in the Europa Passage on Thursday. In addition to the well-known Ottifanten products and mulled wine cups, there are also classic paintings. He painted them in the old master technique, whether in oil or acrylic, the primer with a dash of East Frisian tea should make them just as unmistakable as the little plush Ottifants. "I dreamed of having my own gallery when I was an art student," said Waalkes.

"I'm grateful, I can show what I want here," said Waalkes, who studied at the art college in the Hanseatic city for eight semesters. "This is my little Frisian painting room." The works of his companion Udo Lindenberg can be found directly opposite.

Gallery owner Christoph Walentowski appreciates the draftsman: "Otto is wonderfully versatile. In addition, there is his unmistakable sense of humor, which speaks from each of his pictures and makes his works truly unique. And even many of his fan articles are now collector's value." Ottifanten have been one of the North German actor's trademarks for decades.
