'I really need to lose weight?': 'Friends' changed Lisa Kudrow's body image

When Lisa Kudrow sees herself in the cult sitcom "Friends", she was "shaken": Alongside her co-stars Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox, the Phoebe actress feels uncomfortable in her body. Around 20 years later, the actress has a completely different relationship to her looks.

Actress Lisa Kudrow has revealed on a podcast that her body image changed while filming "Friends." This especially came about when the Phoebe actress spotted herself on screen alongside her co-stars Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox. "I thought I was just really skinny and could do anything," the 59-year-old told the Podcast Podcrushed. "It wasn't until 'Friends' that I realized I didn't really look like what I thought I looked like." That was "shocking". "I was like, 'I really need to lose weight? I need to go on a diet? Oh no.'"

Kudrow played Phoebe Buffay on the US sitcom Friends from 1994 to 2004. When asked whether the media reports at the time had had any influence, Kudrow said no. "It was just the fact that I saw myself on the show, that I saw myself in outfits and Courteney and Jennifer in outfits." Her co-stars Aniston and Cox, who were "like sisters" to her, would then accompany her to dress rehearsals and give her advice.

"But I quickly realized that it wasn't just about the right clothes. I won't say I was overweight. I just had no idea of the actual shape of my body." Kudrow only really accepted her body in her forties. "I was like, 'It's okay. This is what I look like,'" the actress said. "I said to myself, 'Do what you have to do to be healthy, but your body is fine like that.'"
