"I was limited": Johnny Depp collects millions for works of art

They show world stars such as Bob Dylan, Elizabeth Taylor and Al Pacino: US actor Johnny Depp sells hundreds of portrait prints he has made himself through a British gallery. Now the 59-year-old seems almost relieved.

Hollywood star Johnny Depp has sold artworks he made for more than three million euros. The 780 prints, featuring portraits of musicians Bob Dylan and Keith Richards, the late Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor and actor Al Pacino, were offered through British gallery Castle Fine Art. As of Thursday evening, the collection called "Friends and Heroes" was sold out.

A single print costs £3,950 (just under €4,700) and a set of four costs £14,950. "My paintings have surrounded my life, but I kept them to myself and limited myself," the gallery quoted the 59-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star as saying. "No one should ever limit themselves." The works are a tribute "to those he (Depp) knew well and to others who inspired him as a person," the gallery wrote.

Depp posted a photo of himself and four portraits of Dylan, Richards, Taylor and Pacino to Instagram. Castle Fine Art gallery posted a photo showing the actor creating a Dylan portrait.

Depp had made headlines in recent months mainly because of the bitter legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard. Both had accused each other of defamation, in the end a court in the US state of Virginia awarded Depp $ 10 million in damages and Heard $ 2 million. The actress, known from films such as "Aquaman" and "The Danish Girl", is appealing the verdict, as is Depp.
