"Indescribably sad": Pogues bassist Darryl Hunt is dead

The Pogues mourn the loss of their bassist. Darryl Hunt has been on stage with the folk punk band since 1986. He has now died at the age of 72.

The bassist of the Anglo-Irish folk-punk band The Pogues, Darryl Hunt, is dead. The band announced this on Twitter and on their website on Tuesday. The musician died in London on Monday afternoon at the age of 72, it said. Nothing is known about the cause of death. "We are incredibly sad," the band wrote on Twitter. The Pogues quoted a line from Hunt's song "Love You 'Till The End".

Pogues singer Shane MacGowan tweeted that Darryl Hunt "was a really nice guy and a great friend and a great bass player. We all miss him." The band formed in London in the early 1980s. Hunt, who came from Hampshire in southern England and had previously tried his hand at jazz bands, joined in 1986, first as a roadie and a little later as a bassist. He stayed until the band broke up in 1996. When the Pogues gave concerts again from 2001, Hunt was back on stage with them. In addition, he pursued various other musical projects, since 1990 he has been DJing as a house DJ, including regularly in the Munich club "Ultraschall".

One of the Pogues' best-known songs is "Fairytale of New York" (1987), which has since become a modern Christmas classic. Hunt's "Love You' Till The End" appeared on the band's final album, 1996's "Pogue Mahone".
