"It's sexist": Depp's lawyer reacts to rumors of love

Lawyer Camille Vasquez suddenly became famous as a result of the Johnny Depp defamation trial. Fans of the Hollywood star see her as a kind of freedom fighter, and there is often talk of an affair with her client. That's "sexist," says Vasquez now.

Johnny Depp's lawyer Camille Vasquez has denied rumors of a romantic relationship with the actor. She called the speculation "sexist". Vasquez was best known for Depp's defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard in Virginia. In an interview with the US magazine "People", she said she was disappointed that people found her dealings with Depp "inappropriate or unprofessional" in any way.

"I care deeply about my clients and we've obviously become friends. But when I say we, I mean the whole team, and of course that includes Johnny," Vasquez told People. She added that the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star has been a friend and client for four and a half years.

Apparently she is very angry about the love rumors: "It's also an unethical accusation. It's sexist." It was "regrettable and disappointing", but at the same time it was foreseeable, the lawyer continued: "I can't say that I was very surprised." When dealing with Depp, she also explained that she was generally a warm person: "I hug everyone and I'm not ashamed of it."

The 37-year-old also added: "This man was fighting for his life and it broke my heart to see him sit there day after day and listen to the most horrible allegations that have been leveled against him." She wanted to give him a little comfort by taking his hand or letting him know "that we are here and will fight for him because he deserves it". Vasquez also revealed that she is in a relationship and is "very happy" with her boyfriend.

The attention she drew through the process was "a bit overwhelming," the attorney said. "But if I can be an inspiration for young women who want to go to law school and study and work hard, then it was all worth it," she said previously in a TV interview. There are now dozens of Vásquez fan accounts created by Johnny Depp fans on social media. In it she is revered as a kind of freedom fighter and heroine and celebrated for her cross-examination with Amber Heard.

The jury found Amber Heard guilty of defamation in the June trial. The fine was $15 million, but due to Virginia law, Heard is only fined $10.35 million. Depp was also fined $2 million. The jury found that a former lawyer for Depp slandered the actress.
