Two heads of state in France were also killed while exercising their duties. Sadi Carnot, the first, was President of the Republic from December 3, 1887 until he was assassinated by his fellow citizens on June 24, 1894. This occurred just a few months prior to the expiration of his term. When Sante Geronimo Caserio, an Italian anarchist, stabbed him while he was walking to the theater in Lyon, he was waving to his fellow citizens. He was severely wounded and died in hospital. Sante Geronimo Caserio received a sentence and was guillotined 13 days later.

Paul Doumer, the President of the Republic, was elected in 1931. He was then killed on May 6, 1932. He was attacked at the Salon of Veteran Writers of the First World War, Paris. A few hours later, he was shot and then died in hospital. "le Figaro” points out that the media and public authorities will feed the story to propagandize the event in the context of the global economic crisis and rising xenophobia.

Thomas Sankara was the former president of Burkina Faso. He was assassinated by his own armies during a coup. The anti-imperialist figure and hero of African youth, Thomas Sankara, was the leader of the former Upper Volta until October 15, 1987.
