King's daughters at the women's European Championship: Leonor and Sofía master their first solo appearance

In Great Britain, the Spanish heir to the throne Leonor and sister Sofía are making their first appearance abroad without their parents. In the women's European Championship game Spain against Denmark, the daughters of King Felipe and Letizia can celebrate at the end - and show that they are fledged.

The young girls in the Spanish royal family are growing up: at the European Football Championship for women in England, heir to the throne Leonor and sister Sofía made their first official appearance abroad on behalf of the crown without their parents, who stayed at home in Spain. As far as is known, a visit from the British royal family was not planned.

The daughters of King Felipe and Queen Letizia attended Spain's match against Denmark at Brentford Community Stadium, west of London, on Saturday night - and welcomed Marta Cardona's last-minute goal in Spain's 1-0 win. They were accompanied on the VIP stand by Spain's Minister of Culture and Sport, Miquel Iceta.

After the final whistle, Leonor and Sofía went into the Spaniards' dressing room to congratulate the team on reaching the quarter-finals, the royal family said. The head of the Spanish federation, Luis Rubiales, gave them national jerseys with the number 10 under their respective names.

Leonor left the royal nest last summer: she continues her schooling at a boarding school in Wales. She is due to complete one more school year at UWC Atlantic College on the south Welsh coast not far from Cardiff. The royal family had stressed that Leonor would not neglect her institutional duties in Wales. Sofía still lives with her parents in the Palacio de la Zarzuela northwest of Madrid.
