Kühnert prefers tenants to owners – without the “trappings of a property”

According to his own statement, SPD general secretary Kevin Kühnert prefers to rent than to own an apartment. Having his own apartment does not correspond to his idea of living, the Berlin-based politician told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Monday).

"It's a very personal preference, nothing more," said the 33-year-old. “Some feel more comfortable living in their own property, and others experience it as more of a stress and strain, preferring not to be as involved with all the trappings of a property. And I belong to the latter. That's also a bit of the Berlin mentality. We are mostly renters here.”

In his Bundestag constituency Berlin-Tempelhof-Schoeneberg, for example, 80 percent of the people rented, said Kühnert. "That shapes."

In his own words, the SPD politician does not dream of owning his own house. "I'm not the nest stool. I also don't like to spend a lot of my life on furnishing my home, gardening and so on," said Kühnert. For him it is more important “which places I visit, what experiences I take with me. But not so much how valuable the things in my display case are at home".

In the past, Kühnert had advocated that everyone should only own the living space in which they live. In May, the SPD politician announced that he had not been able to find a rental apartment in Berlin for over a year.
