Today, March 14, Pi Number Day is celebrated and, in turn, Mathematics Day. The celebration was the idea of physicist Larry Shaw, a worker at the San Francisco (California) Science Museum, who in 1988 proposed this date (3/14 according to American notation) to honor and promote mathematics throughout the world.
The idea gradually grew in popularity until in 2009 the United States House of Representatives recognized March 14 as National Pi Day.
As a curiosity, the culmination of Pi Day occurs at 01:59 AM, referring to the following decimals of the number (3'14159).
The number pi, also known as 3.1416, is an infinite number. It is obtained by dividing the length of a circle by its diameter.
Its exact value has not been extracted although, as it is the most popular irrational number, thousands of its decimals have been calculated. The record for her calculation is held by computer scientist Emma Haruka, who in 2022 calculated up to 100 trillion digits thanks to Google technology.
The name of the number Pi refers to the Greek letter used to define it. The chosen letter is not accidental but comes from a Greek word that means periphery.
The number Pi is commonly used in geometry and trigonometry but has practical applications in areas such as engineering, physics, and cosmology.
