Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: Government: Belgium as a model for cooperation with Poland

Schwerin/Greifswald/Stettin (dpa/mv) - In order to intensify cooperation with Poland, the state government in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to follow the example of the province of East Belgium. "East Belgium works with the neighboring German regions in a European network of territorial cooperation. This means that many decisions of cross-border importance are made jointly at regional level," explained Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) on Wednesday after the state cabinet's visit to Brussels. In her own words, she also envisions such a cooperation for the transnational metropolitan region around Stettin (Szczecin) in Poland.

District Administrator Michael Sack (CDU) commented on the initiative until such a territorial network can be created in cooperation with the Vorpommern-Greifswald district on the border with Poland. "That's why the interest of the country and the early support are very important tailwind for it."
