Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: Inauguration of the chemical extension building at the University of Rostock

Rostock (dpa/mv) - The extension building of the Institute of Chemistry was inaugurated at the University of Rostock on Friday. Finance Minister Heiko Geue (SPD) said that all sustainability criteria were taken into account in the building, which cost almost 30 million euros. The heat supply for the building runs via the local heating network of the University of Rostock and via a heat pump that is fed with geothermal energy. "The geothermal system covers the base load of the heating and cooling requirements in the new building economically."

The new building is an example of modern working environments: concentrated research in the offices and laboratories as well as interdisciplinary exchange are integrated into the building. Open bunks on all four floors enabled collaborative work in direct connection to the laboratories. There is a photovoltaic system on the green roof, the output of which is used for self-consumption. A rainwater cistern collects water that is used, among other things, for watering the outdoor facilities and for cooling the exhaust air.
