Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: Large solar thermal system goes into operation in Greifswald

Greifswald (dpa / mv) - According to the operator, one of the largest solar thermal systems in Germany will go into operation in Greifswald on Thursday (9.30 a.m.). Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig, Schwerin's Interior Minister Christian level (both SPD) and Michael Kellner, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics (Greens) are to take part in the ceremony to mark the start of operations.

According to Stadtwerke Greifswald (SWS), the four-hectare system with its collectors is designed for an output of around 8 gigawatt hours per year. That corresponds to more than three percent of the total heat generation in the city area. The system feeds the main district heating network with CO2-neutral district heating. On summer days, it can cover the base load with around 11 megawatts. According to the information, surpluses go into a heat storage tank and can be used later.
