Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: Mild winter in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania

Offenbach/Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has again experienced a mild winter. The average of 2.8 degrees was well above the value of the internationally valid reference period from 1961 to 1990 (0.2) and slightly below the national average of 2.9 degrees, as reported by the German Weather Service on Monday.

At 160 liters per square meter (Germany: 170 liters), precipitation increased by 25 percent in a long-term comparison. At 135 hours, the sunshine duration was well below the German average of 160 hours.

"Germany experienced the twelfth winter that was too warm in a row," summed up Uwe Kirsche from the German Weather Service. "Climate change is not letting up." Germany experienced the coldest and downright icy phase of winter in the second decade of December. At the turn of the year there were record temperatures, some well into the plus range.
