Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: More than 2700 new students at the University of Rostock

Rostock (dpa/mv) - So far, more than 2700 students have enrolled at the University of Rostock for the 2022/23 winter semester. On Friday afternoon, the university wanted to welcome the freshmen with a parade and the traditional enrollment ceremony, as the university announced on Friday. After a two-year Corona break, the celebration will take place again in the usual way - at the founding place of the University of Rostock, in the St. Marien Church. Almost 12,000 students are enrolled at the university.

There was strong demand for the restricted-admission subjects in primary school education, special education, biology, English and social studies. The bachelor's degree courses in biosciences, computer science, communication and media sciences, social sciences and economics also aroused great interest.

According to the University of Greifswald, more than 1,560 students have so far enrolled. The total number of students in Greifswald is more than 10,270. The matriculation ceremony will take place there on Monday.

The winter semester at both universities officially began on October 1st, Monday was the first day of lectures in Rostock, and lectures in Greifswald are scheduled to start next Monday. Both universities recently expressed their concern about the increased costs. The universities in the north-east - for example in Neubrandenburg and Wismar - had already started the semester around four weeks ago.
