Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: New theater workshop in Neustrelitz officially opened

Neustrelitz (dpa/mv) - The Theater und Orchester GmbH Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz has a completely new theater workshop. The workshop with an approximately 1000 square meter and nine meter high industrial hall was officially opened on Tuesday.

"The new building is a child of the Theater Pact MV," said Minister of Culture Bettina Martin (SPD) in a video greeting. This will give the theater landscape in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania a perspective. All the stage sets for Theater und Orchester GmbH are created in the workshop, which, with around 200 employees, is one of the four large theaters in the northeast.

The large stage set for the current open-air opera "Carmen" was already built there. With the new building, which took around one and a half years to work on, the conditions for theater workers are also improving. They had worked at the theater in older buildings for about 70 years, most recently with many makeshift arrangements.

Shareholders and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania invested around 3.1 million euros in the workshop. The state contributed one million euros, Neustrelitz 800,000 euros. The construction was completed on budget and on schedule, despite price hikes in the construction sector, it said.

The carpenters, tailors and locksmiths previously worked in the rehearsal stage, the Hofmarschallhaus, and in the historic royal stables at the theatre. Both historical buildings are now empty and can be renovated.

Neustrelitz was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, which existed from 1701 to 1918. The star-shaped town plan and many buildings are under monument protection.
