Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: Sportforum in Wismar is named after Joachim Streich

Wismar (dpa / mv) - Wismar will have a Joachim Streich sports forum in the future. The citizens of the Hanseatic city have decided to name the sports facilities on Mayor-Haupt-Strasse after the exceptional footballer, reported the "Schweriner Volkszeitung" (Wednesday).

Streich, who was born in Wismar and died almost two months ago, was one of the greatest footballers in East Germany. In the Oberliga he played for FC Hansa Rostock (1969 to 1975) and 1. FC Magdeburg (1975 to 1985). The striker has 102 caps and scored 55 goals. With 229 goals in 378 games, he is the record goalscorer in the GDR Oberliga.

"Joachim Streich has become a role model for many and with his goals he has made many people forget their worries," said CDU parliamentary group leader Tom Brüggert. "Because of his merits and his sincerity outside of the football field, we are very pleased to be able to pay tribute to the native of Wismar."
