Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: start of the state parliament session: commemoration and energy debate

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The state parliament in Schwerin is taking the historic date of November 9th as an opportunity to start its three-day session by commemorating the victims of the 1938 pogrom night. Organized by the National Socialists, gangs of thugs destroyed Jewish businesses, set churches on fire and killed people. In a motion submitted jointly by the SPD, Left, CDU, Greens and FDP, the demand to learn lessons from history is underpinned and the will to resolutely oppose any form of anti-Semitism.

After the commemoration in the state parliament, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) will open the debate on current energy supply issues and measures to curb price increases with another government statement. There are several applications on the subject. In the previous week, the federal and state governments had agreed on an aid package intended to relieve citizens and businesses of the high energy costs. Criticism came from the CDU. In view of the many unanswered questions, the opposition faction warned the red-red coalition against turning the debate into another "jubilee aria for the state government".

The state parliament also has an amendment to the law to vote on Wednesday, which is intended to lower the minimum age for participation in state elections from 18 to 16 years.
