Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: State government: Cooperation with democracies in the Baltic Sea region

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - With a "MV Cooperation Council for a Democratic Baltic Sea Region", the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to strengthen relations with Poland, the Scandinavian countries and the Baltic States. The body is intended to support the government in developing a Baltic Sea strategy. "There are many fields in which we can work together even more closely. This applies above all in the economy, for example in the field of renewable energies or in the field of digitization," said Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday in Schwerin. The exchange could also be intensified in the areas of science and culture.

Europe Minister Bettina Martin (SPD) is to take over the leadership of the new Cooperation Council. "The Baltic Sea region in the center of Europe harbors enormous opportunities and potential for the development of the entire region. We want to use them together," explained Susanne Bowen, Secretary of State for Europe, on behalf of Martin. There are already well-functioning partnerships, especially in the scientific sector.

The 29-strong panel is to be made up of experts from the country and beyond. According to the information, these include scientists, cultural workers, a youth representative and members of chambers and from the field of digitization.
