Stralsund (dpa/mv) - Numerous people commemorated the victory over the imperial troops almost 400 years ago in Stralsund on Friday with historical costumes and weapons. The traditional Wallenstein Days in the city last until Sunday. On Friday, among other things, a parade through the old town was on the program. The festival also includes a historic fair, a camp in the style of the Thirty Years' War, equestrian games and the thunder of cannons. According to its own statements, the folk festival is one of the largest in northern Germany.

With the Wallenstein Days, the Hanseatic City of Stralsund is keeping alive the memory of the Thirty Years' War. It celebrates the successful resistance against the siege by the imperial troops under General Albrecht von Wallenstein on July 24, 1628. After 1628, the city commemorated Wallenstein's departure with a festival service every year. From 1825 onwards, the citizens celebrated the day with a festival every year except between 1945 and 1991.
