Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: Warmest New Year's Eve in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania

Hiddensee (dpa/mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania experienced the warmest New Year's Eve in 2022 since measurements began. In the afternoon, the highest temperature in the country was measured in Rostock-Warnemünde at 14.1 degrees Celsius, as meteorologist Uwe Ulbrich from the Hiddensee weather studio told the German Press Agency. This means that the record of 12.9 degrees registered just a year ago has been overtaken.

Records tumbled in other cities too. According to Ulbrich, 13.3 degrees were measured in Schwerin in the afternoon after 12.9 degrees a year ago. In Neubrandenburg-TRollenhagen, the thermometer showed 13.2 degrees on Saturday afternoon. The previous record on New Year's Eve in 2021 was also measured there at 12.7 degrees. For comparison: According to Ulbrich, the average maximum temperature in December is 4 degrees Celsius.

"The last day of this year will certainly be remembered - at least as far as the weather is concerned," said Tobias Reinartz from the weather forecast center of the German Weather Service. It was "extraordinarily mild". According to Reinartz, a "strong south-westerly current that spreads between two extensive air pressure zones" is responsible. This directs warm subtropical air to Germany, which, with the help of the very lively wind, is noticeable not only in higher layers of the air, but also near the ground. At midnight, the temperature in many places in Germany will still be between 10 and 15 degrees, according to the forecast. According to Ulbrich, it will still be very mild in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on Sunday.
