Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 19 mills open for the German Mill Day on Whit Monday

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - On the German Mill Day on Whit Monday, 19 wind, water and motor mills open their doors in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. They turn the wings or water wheels, rev up engines and invite guests to guided tours and small festivals, as the Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian Mill Association announced on Monday. The nationwide opening event of the German Mill Day took place in the grinding mill in Schwerin.

According to the information, the Dutch windmills in Altkalen, Alt Schwerin, Anklam, Benz, Malchow, Kröpelin, Ruchow, Stove, Steinhagen and Wittenburg are taking part in the Mühlentag in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Also included are the post mills in Greifswald-Eldena, Klockenhagen, Storkow and Pudagla, the water mills in Altentreptow-Rosemarsow, Ridin and Hanshagen, the grinding mill in Schwerin and the backhouse mill in Bad Doberan.

Just 150 years ago, hundreds of windmills and watermills shaped the landscape, almost every village had its own mill, as it was called. It was only the modern large mills that deprived them of their economic basis. Today there are still around 150 water mills, 120 windmills and 40 motor mill locations in MV. Often they can only be identified on ruins or a few stones or wooden beams. 217 mills are classified as technical monuments in MV.
