Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 6.5 million euros in funding for a new swimming pool on Rügen

Bergen (dpa/mv) - The state government is supporting the construction of a new swimming pool on Rügen with EU funds, among other things. In Bergen, Minister of Sport Stefanie Drese (SPD) handed over a corresponding notification of grant amounting to 6.5 million euros to Mayor Anja Ratzke (independent) on Wednesday. As the ministry announced, the swimming pool, which is already under construction, will be used for school swimming and recreational sports and, according to the city, will be completed in August of this year. The total costs are estimated at around 11.7 million euros.

In the north-east there is a lack of suitable indoor swimming pools for swimming lessons. According to the Ministry of Education, this was recently also hampered by the corona pandemic. Most recently, the government and opposition had agreed on a new teaching concept to strengthen children's swimming skills. Among other things, it provides for more one-week compact courses, additional staff and supplementary summer courses.
