Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 9-euro ticket: Meyer skeptical about the long-term effect

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - After the start of sales for the nationwide 9-euro ticket for local transport, Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) warns of a flash in the pan. "We will see whether the ticket will also sensitize more guests to local public transport in the long term. It will be settled at the end," he said on Tuesday in Schwerin. Due to the large crowds and limited staff and vehicle options, there could be bottlenecks in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from June to August when arriving and departing from tourist centers.

Meyer appealed again to Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) to think beyond that and provide more money for public transport - this is about the so-called regionalization funds. "It's about guaranteeing the current range of transport in the long term and making the necessary expansions to achieve the climate protection goals," said Meyer.

With the 9-euro monthly ticket, passengers can use local and regional public transport nationwide from next month - in all cities and across all network borders. The special tickets are to be offered for June, July and August - each for 9 euros per month and therefore much cheaper than normal monthly tickets.
