Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: A look at health: the alliance receives millions in funding

Greifswald (dpa/mv) - A new alliance in Western Pomerania, which among other things takes care of human and animal health, is being supported with up to 18 million euros by the Federal Ministry of Research. The University of Greifswald announced on Wednesday that the alliance is focusing on acute problems in the region that limit or endanger health and quality of life. The university took the leadership of the project. Examples are therefore antibiotic resistance, the entry of germs from agriculture or animal diseases.

In addition to the University of Greifswald, the University Medicine Greifswald, the Helmholtz Institute for One Health, the Research Institute for Livestock Biology Dummerstorf and partners from business, associations, foundations, culture, public administration and politics are involved.

According to the information, the alliance prevailed with eleven other alliances against 115 submitted sketches and will be funded by the Federal Ministry of Research for up to nine years.

Among other things, school projects or conferences to sensitize the population to the topic of One Health (one health) are planned - i.e. the interaction of the health of humans and animals as well as the environment. The topic also includes, for example, nutrition in tourism or the effects of road construction.

One Health has received increasing attention from several institutions in the region for some time. For example, from the Friedrich Loeffler Institute on the island of Riems.
