Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Addiction: Alcoholism still widespread in the north-east

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - According to the current addiction help report, alcohol is still the most common addictive substance in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. "Although there has been a downward trend since 2015, the alcohol problem remains at a very high level. Unlike last year, most clients in the advice centers are employed," said Birgit Grämke from the state coordination office for addiction issues (Lakost) on Friday in Schwerin With. Around 10,000 people visit the 25 advice centers in the state every year.

Health Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD) emphasized: "Addiction and dependency can affect people of all ages and in every life situation". It is important to take developments and relocations seriously without stigmatizing those affected.

According to the information in the annual report, both the number of people over 60 and women among those seeking help increased compared to the previous year. More people also came to counseling for problems with cannabis, cocaine and stimulants, it said.

The data on which the addiction support report is based is collected by the counseling centers - a nationwide standardized procedure applies.
