Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: AfD lawsuit against corona funds before the state constitutional court

Greifswald (dpa/mv) - On Thursday (11:00 a.m.) the state constitutional court negotiated the controversial MV protection fund to deal with the consequences of the corona pandemic. The AfD parliamentary group complained. She considers the increase in the MV protection fund from 700 million to 2.85 billion euros in December 2020 by the state parliament to be unconstitutional.

For the AfD parliamentary group, among other things, there is sometimes an insufficient connection between the measures to be financed by the loans and the corona pandemic. Projects planned before the crisis, such as the digitization of schools, would have to be financed from regular budget funds.

The supplementary budget violates the constitutional debt brake, budget constitutional principles and the budget law of the state parliament. The protection fund will be inflated into a secondary budget over which the state parliament has only limited control. The state government and the state parliament consider the lawsuit to be unfounded.

There was also criticism of the billions of euros in the MV protection fund from other quarters, for example from the state audit office, the FDP or the taxpayers' association. According to the court, a decision will be announced at a later date.
