Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: African swine fever: the district trains search dogs

Wismar (dpa / mv) - In order to monitor African swine fever, the district of Northwest Mecklenburg has trained its own search dogs. At the end of February, the first two teams passed their test successfully, the district announced on Monday in Wismar. Another test is scheduled for May.

According to the information, the veterinary office has been working with an experienced hunter since September 2022 to train hunters and dogs in the region. Since 2021, up to 70 wild search dog teams from all over Germany have been deployed in the areas affected by the animal disease.

As the circle explained, the dogs are imprinted on the scent of wild boar carcasses for five months. There are two different training goals: On the one hand, search dogs that lie down and wait next to a carcass that has been found, and those that commute between the carcass and the hunter in order to show him the way.
