Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: After a series of fires in Neubrandenburg, there was another fire

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - Two months after the major fire in a boat shed in Neubrandenburg, fire was set on the site again. As a police spokeswoman said on Thursday, a four-meter-long strip of reeds burned early in the morning at an access gate to a row of boat sheds. The police are investigating arson. The flames also caught pipes lying there.

Alarmed firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby row of boat sheds, as the spokeswoman said. The search for suspects is still ongoing.

There had been three fires in the facility, which has around 400 boat sheds, since April, in which more than 70 sheds and the boats in them were destroyed. The total damage was estimated at 1.4 million euros. The major fire at the beginning of May alone destroyed 60 of the shelters for the boat owners at the end of the facility, which is not far from Lake Tollense and borders the culture park and the Oberbach.

Police suspect the fires are related. The city is still working on a disposal concept before the clean-up can begin on a large scale. Some of the ruins have already been cordoned off with a site fence, and an oil barrier is still in place to prevent pollutants from escaping.
