Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: After bike accidents: police intensify two-wheeler controls

Lobbe/Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - After a few serious accidents involving cyclists in August, the police in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are paying more attention to cyclists. As a police spokeswoman said on Thursday in Neubrandenburg, cyclists, mopeds, motorbikes and scooter drivers will be checked more intensively during the monthly checks in September. Accident blackspots are also examined, the lighting is checked and, among other things, driving on the correct side of the road is pointed out.

In August there were a large number of serious accidents in the north-east, mainly involving e-bikes. Two cyclists died near Barth (West Pomerania-Rügen) and in Alt Gaarz (Mecklenburg Lake District) and several cyclists were seriously injured.

Most recently, a car and a 21-year-old cyclist from Berlin collided near Lobbe on the island of Rügen on Thursday. According to the police, the cyclist had suddenly crossed the street so that the 60-year-old driver was no longer able to brake in time. The cyclist was thrown over the hood and seriously injured.

During the controls, the police also want to point out the illegal use of sidewalks by e-scooter drivers. For children up to ten years of age, cycling is allowed on sidewalks, in this context also for supervisors, a spokeswoman said.
