Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Again more asylum applications in MV in the first half of the year

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, significantly more people applied for asylum in the first half of the year than in the same period last year. From January to June it was 1892, as the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) announced on Thursday. In the same period last year, there were 1235 applications. According to a Bamf spokesman, refugees from Ukraine are unlikely to be included in the figures because they are granted a different, faster procedure.

As early as 2021, there was a significant increase in the north-east compared to the same half of the previous year (696 applications). According to the Federal Office, one reason for the lower numbers in the first half of 2020 was the travel restrictions caused by the pandemic. According to the Schwerin Ministry of the Interior, immigration via Belarus will also play an important role in 2021.

Nationwide, too, the number of asylum applications in 2022 rose by around 44 percent to 84,583 applications compared to the same half of the previous year, according to the Bamf. According to the authorities, the numbers also depend significantly on the situation in the respective countries of origin of the refugees.
