Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Air bomb on Lärz airfield successfully defused

Lärz (dpa/mv) - The World War II bomb found during construction work at the Lärz airfield (Mecklenburg Lake District) is no longer dangerous. As a spokesman for the Röbel office said on Thursday, the defusing of the dud by experts from the ammunition recovery service took only a few minutes this time. The explosive find from World War II was the fifth bomb found in the region within a few weeks.

According to the Röbel office, this time it was a 125-kilogram aircraft bomb of American design with a rear fuse. In the course of the closure with a diameter of two kilometers, the federal highway 198 was temporarily closed. A solar park is to be built on the airfield site. Therefore, a more detailed search is carried out and preparatory work is underway. A bomb weighing 500 kilograms was detonated in a controlled manner in November. Three duds have appeared in the neighboring north of Rechlins when examining a former military depot.

Before 1945, the German Air Force had a testing center in the region, employing several thousand people. The huge area, part of which is still a restricted area today, was bombed several times at the end of the war.
