Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Almost 30 percent more road deaths in MV

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The number of traffic deaths in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania rose by 29.4 percent in the first seven months of this year compared to the same period in 2021. "According to the preliminary results of the police, 44 people died in traffic accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania by the end of July 2022. Compared to the same period last year, the number of fatalities unfortunately increased by 10 people," said Transport Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) on Monday. He urged careful driving. Above all, it is important to sit sober at the wheel.

The federal and state governments have set themselves the goal of reducing the number of road deaths by 40 percent by 2030 compared to 2021. According to Meyer, this goal should be achieved with a mix of education, prevention and traffic controls. In 2021, 68 people died on Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's roads. This was the lowest number since 1990.

The "Don't drink and drive Academy" tour 2022, whose patron is the Minister of Transport, started at a Schwerin vocational school on Monday. Eight vocational schools in the northeast are to be included. The core is a so-called blood alcohol driving simulator. From the driver's perspective, it conveys up close and unfiltered how visual acuity decreases at 0.8 per mille, speeds are misjudged and steering movements are uncoordinated.
