Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Area in organic farming grows in the first quarter

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the area used for organic farming increased by 2.8 percent to 195,449 hectares in the first three months of the year. "This means that around 14.5 percent of the agricultural land is currently being farmed organically by 1,212 organically certified farms," said the Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday when the date for the world's largest organic food fair "BioFach" was announced. In 2021 as a whole, the acreage grew by 7.5 percent.

On Tuesday, Minister of Agriculture Till Backhaus (SPD) had already pointed out that the north-east was at the top of the national comparison with its proportion of organic cultivation area. In the other countries, the proportion is between 6 and 8 percent. However, the minister also reported on the current crisis in demand, which has fallen by 15 percent as a result of the rise in food prices.

The trade fair for ecological agriculture is to take place on July 29 in Nuremberg, Franconia. "Corona-related uncertainties made it necessary to postpone the trade fair from February to the summer," says Backhaus. Among the approximately 2900 exhibitors should also be three companies from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, whose joint stand will be subsidized by the state with around 60,000 euros.
