Schwerin (dpa/mv) - At this year's Christopher Street Day in Schwerin, around 1000 people, mainly young people, demonstrated on Saturday for the acceptance of sexual and gender diversity. "We in MV are open to diversity in society. It doesn't matter what religion someone has or what sexuality. We are all people who want to live well together," said the patron, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD), at the event the state capital.

After the kick-off event in the Old Garden, the rainbow flag was hoisted in front of the State Chancellery for the first time. "It's a clear sign of tolerance and cosmopolitanism," says Schwesig. In May, the state government made it easier for municipalities and state authorities to use alternative flags.

A guest at this year's CSD was one of the first openly transgender members of the Bundestag, the Green environmental politician Tessa Ganserer.
