Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Association hopes for less tank tourism thanks to tank discounts

Especially in border regions, some people drive abroad to fill up. The operators in Germany lose a lot of sales as a result - the tank discount gives them hope.

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The petrol station association is hoping for less tank tourism in neighboring countries because of the tank discount. "We expect the tank discount to reduce the price difference to neighboring European countries," said Hans-Joachim Rühlemann, Chairman of the Association of Garages and Gas Stations North-East (VGT). "So that it's no longer worth driving across the border to fill up."

This is enormously important for the survival of some gas stations in the country. "The petrol stations near the border to Poland are desperately waiting for every customer. Their situation is life-threatening, they have their backs to the wall," said Rühlemann. In his opinion, the effect of the tank discount on tank tourism should be visible in the short term.

At the start of the discount, the VGT expects more customers. The problem, however, is that the operators will still buy the fuel at the old price until June 2nd. "But many people don't want to buy expensive products and then sell them cheaper," said Rühlemann. If there is actually a big rush, the VGT expects that individual gas stations will run empty. "But that should calm down after a few days."

From July 1st, taxes on fuel will fall sharply. The tax cut is valid for three months and is intended to relieve motorists in view of the extremely high fuel prices. Gas station operators and mineral oil companies determine how much the fuel costs at the gas station. You are under no obligation to pass on the tax cut.
